Flash Eurobarometer

1. General description

    The Flash Eurobarometer is a small-scale, European cross-national survey research programme on attitudes, values and beliefs regarding a wide range of topics in the socio-cultural and socio-political domain. It is part of the general Eurobarometer, which is a series of surveys regularly performed on behalf of the European Commission (EC). The Flash Eurobarometer survey provides extra information on special target groups or special topics when required by the Commission. The surveys have been conducted since 1987 in all EU member states, occasionally also reducing or enlarging the range of countries for specific topics.

2. Survey type

  • Cross-national or national, depending on topic
  • Cross-sectional. The Flash Eurobarometers have been carried out irregularly, since 1987
  • Representative national samples, > 15 year of age. In the case of special election- or referendum-related topics, the age limit can be 18 and over
  • No single core questionnaire, questionnaires differ per Flash Eurobarometer. For an overview of the topics per Flash Eurobarometer, see GESIS

3. Participating countries

  • Participating countries differ per Flash Eurobarometer. With every European Union enlargement more countries participate in the Flash Eurobarometer
  • All countries (EU-28): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom
  • Occasionally, applicant and/or candidate countries (for EU enlargement), or EFTA (European Free Trade Association) countries and the United States (for entrepreneurship) participate
